When viewing an article or a list of references in the browser, click the Mendeley Web Importer icon in the toolbar. The extension will analyse the page and retrieve metadata like title, authors, etc. and PDF full texts (where available) for you to add to your Mendeley library.
Get a Mendeley account at https://www.mendeley.com/ where you can save, read and cite the articles you import with the extension. You will also receive 2GB of free storage space.
Useful but signs you out too frequently (every few days). Heaven forbid anyone add to my Mendeley library without my permission.
this used to work so well, but now it just gives either a login cycle loop or if i can log in, it gives me error when trying to add to library
It does not offer many of the functionality. Why can we not add tags while saving articles to the library. It shouldn’t be too difficult to implement. Also it cannot detect PDF on IEEEXplore website. It is one of the major research repository, why do you not support pdf detection there?
What went wrong? All I needed was a click on the icon and the pop-up gave me options to select what I wanted to import. Now it asks me to sign, I do and then nothing follow. The request to sign in stays the same. The cycle repeats if you offer to sign in again. It was not so! What went wrong? Note that I have re-installed five times now.
This is the best one. I’ve tried the other options – EndNote Online, Zotero. This one is very well-designed and has the most features for free. You don’t have to worry about paying for something you might not use that much. If all you care about is managing references (rather than saving PDFs), you’ll never hit the 2 GB data limit.
The web plugin is fantastic! It fits in seamlessly with the articles, has a great workflow, and actually helps you access full articles more quickly from the abstracts. I have multiple ad blockers and content blockers installed and none of them interfered with Mendeley’s performance. No bugs, no issues with login. These are things I’m seeing in top reviews from 2+ years ago that have probably been patched since then.
I had all these articles open in ~50 tabs that had been a PITA to try to get into either of the other ref managers I mentioned. With Mendeley’s plugin it was so simple and quick! Thank you, you’ve saved my semester 🙂
Doesn’t even open or let me use it for, you know, the main reason people use it as an extension

Error: “Pdf not found”
it worked well before, but now it cannot download pdf file from ieeexplore.ieee.org (pdf file are available because I connecting using academic network).
Not stable.
It works for academic papers (albeit very slow). Isn’t working for gray literature (won’t even cite an NPR article). Really disappointing.
Doesn’t work effectively, constantly crashes or gives an “error” message, a complete waste of time. It’s easier just to manually enter entries into the Mendeley desktop library.
I really don’t understand why this web app needs the “enhanced and updated” permissions it requests. Why does a reference manager need to know my GPS location, age, or my download history? I’ve just been prompted to give (new) permissions and I don’t like it! I’m going to move to using an open-source solution where at least I know what is going on.
Ha sido de mucha ayuda, pero hoy no pude guardar las bibliografías, alguien podría ayudarme.
NOTHING HAPPEN WHEN YOU PRESS ON IT
Overall it’s a great plugin and finds the correct information in I’d say 80% of cases. Which is still better than doing it all manually, but not as accurate as downloading a bibtex entry.
Unfortunately there seem to be some issues with how logins are handled. I need to log in again and again all the time. Sometimes the plugin just appears blank. This happens on multiple computers and I’v heard other people complain about it. Have had this issue for years now I think. Please fix this soon, Mendeley!
Too good concept and worst execution.
I rarely use Mendely app. However, most of the times the app hangs or crashes. What is the point of having an app that can’t be used?. Today, I spent nearly 45 min just to open and close the app to realize this is the worst experience anyone can have. Not to mention, tried multiple time signed- out and sign in + even did un and re installation.
Can’t login
I used to use this a lot, but the Mendeley plugin is currently not able to add any PDF or webpage to my library. Everything has to be done manually by downloading the PDF and dragging it in – defeating the point of having a plugin.
Para mi ha sido una herramienta excelente, he solucionado todas las dificultades que tenía en la citación. Simplemente maravilloso
useful but bugged
Convenient, but slow on importing directly from webpages. Sometimes has to search from Mendele webpage and import manually because it takes forever to load from plugin.
Mendeley would you please help me? I’m having difficulties as every time I click on the chrome extension either nothing happens or a ‘mendeley’ window pops up, but it doesn’t have any content, so I can’t add any new references. I’ve deleted the extension and re-installed it but no luck and my deadline is in couple of days ;/ what should I do?
I don’t know what’s the problem, the mendeley extension make appears a small tabs every once I open my chrome. When I click on the extension to use, it shows the small tabs again and is not working at all.
I really wish this worked properly, because it’s actually decent when it does work. Unfortunately this is the second time I’m having to uninstall and reinstall it because the sign in page just disappears and doesn’t let me add anything.
Does not work most of the time, very buggy
