Typing in accented letters or special characters on a PC keyboard is a pain in the neck. This simple Chrome extension aims to make that task slightly easier.
The extension button displays a four-by-four grid of characters. Clicking on a character copies it to the clipboard. Pressing the shift key does what you would expect: it toggles the grid between lowercase and uppercase letters.
You can also use the keyboard to copy characters to the clipboard. The keys 1-4, Q-R, A-F and Z-V correspond to the grid characters in the obvious manner. Chrome allows you to assign a keyboard shortcut to the extension itself: just go to the bottom right hand corner of the Extensions page and follow the link.
The options page lets you customise the choice of characters in the grid. The defaults are set up for common French and German letters, plus a few extras such as smart quotes and dashes.
I haven’t included acute accents in the default setup since these can be typed in directly on US and UK keyboards. For instance, Ctrl + Alt + E gives you an E with an acute accent. Macs have a rich variety of keyboard shortcuts for accents built in, rendering this extension somewhat redundant. It should still work though!

It helps me with homework but it doesn’t have that many accents.
As of 2021, I don’t think this extension works. At least it didn’t work for me ;(
When I went to configure my accent grid and finalized the changes after a 1 day or so it would go back to it’s original configuration.
This extension has been a lifesaver while learning Swedish. If there’s any accents you need that aren’t already included, it’s fully customizable so you can add any accented letters that are missing! This makes it so much easier and simpler to write in a different language.
It works perfectly for school. It’s frustrating to have to spell things out in another language, but not get credit all because I simply couldn’t use accents and other characters.
It’s a good app.
awesome! i love the customization abilities
Looks like it might be missing accents at first, but note that you can customize it! Right click, go to options, and type in the accents you want to show up! Great extension
Didn’t have the accent e that i need most and the letter doesn’t even enter and this was the only accent extension I could find. Horrible.
Formidable quand on a compris qu’en faisant clic droit Option, on peut FAIRE SA PROPRE GRILLE en collant directement les caractères voulus. Moi j’ai mis :
É È Ê Ë
Á À Ç œ
Δ ± ∃ ∄
∀ ≠ ≃ Σ
↗ ↘ ≤ ≥
∩ Ø ↶ ↷
← → ↑ ↓
∈ ∉ Ú Ù
Just what I wanted for French accents! Simple, clean, uncluttered – wonderful.
It even has “–”, “ß”, and “•” which I also use a fair bit.
This is the best accent extension I’ve found to date. Merci!
Did not work in Google Docs (like, really? It’s a Google Chrome extension)
-Revised-
Read some of the reviews and learned that it only copies the character to the clipboard. Why it does not explain this is beyond me. And it really couldn’t be that hard to code in the ability to insert the character at the cursor, could it?
It’s good that it’s customisable and you can add your own accents. However, it’s a bit tedious that it just copies the accent to the keyboard, instead of placing it at the cursor. That requires one more operation per accentuated character, CTRL+V or paste operation. What would be even better for this would be the standard keyboard combination, for example CTRL+’ followed by e would produce the e acute character. To be fair, this is something that Google should provide natively, not through a third-party extension.
Simple et efficace !
Great app once you know how to use it…you need to CTRL-V to paste the accent, and search [google] HTML special characters to change options; the app itself is really wonderful!
it works although it’s rather tedious to use and doesn’t really work for Spanish because of it’s limited characters
it didnt work
Doesn’t work at all.
Ça marche comme prévu.
Why is there no accent aigu? So dumb!!!
DOes not, as expected transfer the accented letter. Does not work at all.
Decent but there were only like 4 accents.
I have been trying to type å for the longest time. It’s a pain when your writing a quick email, and you know you will need to spend a few minutes opening up a site or an app to get the symbol(s). This solution hits the spot!
I use it for German. Works fine.
