Auto Tab Discard a lightweight extension that automatically reduces the memory load of open-but inactive-tabs. This also helps portable devices to save battery.

Features:
1. Speeds up your browser and minimizes memory usage: Inactive, idle, or forgotten tabs can be auto-discarded after a configurable period of time, or discarded manually from the toolbar menu.
2. Designate specific tabs (websites) to be whitelisted to prevent discarding.
3. Discarded tabs can be retained after closing and re-opening your browser.
4. The tab’s favicon displays the discarded state.
5. Tabs are restored with all information intact (like scroll position or the content of text boxes).
6. When a tab is discarded, no JavaScript code or dom event is active (basically, the tab is paused).
7. Force discarding certain hostnames (e.g. you can immediately discard hostnames that use too much CPU or memory)
Options (there are a few options to customize when a tab gets discarded):
1. When a tab is pinned
2. When there is a media source playing inside a tab
3. When the computer is connected to a power source
4. When there is a form element (with changes) that has not yet been submitted.
Notes:
1. Unlike “The Great Suspender” extension, this extension uses the native method to discard tabs, which prevents losing the discarded tabs, when the extension is removed or when the browser crashes. There is no need for session restoring.
Long time replacement of The Great Suspender and still a must have extention for me (who uses way to many tabs)
Simple to use, and allows multi-site keep-alive whitelisting (for sites like stackexchange). Great for my company laptop with “only” 8GB RAM which has many other programs running.
Support sholuld be here not on third sites 🙁 It still doesn’t block Youtube even if I deleted this host under options.

Worthy alternative to “The Great Suspender”.
I change the time setting pretty frequently, so calculating how many seconds are in 2/3/4/5/6 hours **every** single time is frustrating.
Could you please change the time setting from seconds to minutes… or at least give an option to use minutes?
Maybe include a minutes amount setting AND a separate seconds amount setting? (Final setting would be minutes+seconds combined)
I don’t know why anybody would ever need to discard tabs at a specific second? Maybe there’s a reason for using seconds.

Great replacement for The Great Suspender (which had been found to be spyware). Would be awesome to have more shortcuts and “save this tab for all sessions” option

The extension is fine, but all the bookmark icons have been turned into globes and there are problems with keeping history. How do I revert this?
I think this extension is great, but I do have 2 wishes. First an option to keep tabs discarded even when you click on them, if you click on one it will auto un-discard it and I don’t like that. Second I want the extension to remember where I was on Youtube videos, if I discard a tab and unsuspend it, the video will start from the beginning which is annoying. And yes I’m a refugee from The Great Suspender like many others

Found this as a replacement to the great suspender.
Switched to this after The Great Suspender was killed off and it’s mostly okay… but there’s no reason for the obnoxious notifications every time you add a domain to the whitelist. Why on earth would I want to be notified about the thing I just did?
What’s the purpose of “auto tab discard cannot discard a tab when it is active”? I thought, this was the intent. Only if I add another tab on the same window the discarding is allowed. Also, overall the documentation is too scant. Why no mention of chrome://discards/? Coming from The Great Suspender, I’m still not convinced.

It’s a good replacement for that other tab suspending app.
It works good on Chrome but in Opera not that much since it still tries to load a few of the tabs I have already discarded whenever I open the browser.
It is not working for me. I put 1800 secs interval to discard – but is doing nothing – no tabs are discarded.
God does this need a GUI redesign. This is 2020, CSS EXISTS!
Excellent work ! Detailed, meticulous and without overload: installed on Opera version 74. I have too often more and more than 30 tabs open … Shame on me. But thanks to you, I manage my instances much better; my memory is freed all the better too. THANK YOU !

Estaba revisando alternativas a The Great Suspender, incluyendo algún fork cuando he visto mencionada esta extensión. No echo en falta nada, la reemplaza por completo y funciona perfectamente.

Since great suspender got removed (rightfully so, since it contained malware) I’ve had to look for a replacement. I’ve use this extension for just about 1h now, and I got to say I’m impressed. This extension might actually be better than great suspender was at its prime. I managed to reduce the CPU usage of chrome from 67% (of pc total) down to 0.3%
This is a fantastic replacement for The Great Suspender. It does the job well with almost the same config settings. If you need to quickly reload all tabs use the “Reload All Tabs” addon.
