Some sites do funky Javascript things with their links. A link will point to a URL, but for whatever reason the page wants to use javascript to bring you to that URL. Ordinarily, you don’t notice. You click, and you end up at the right page. But it’s Javascript handling the click, not your browser’s default link-clicking behavior.
On the Mac, Command-clicking a link opens it in a new tab. But that’s only if Chrome is handling the click. If the page’s Javascript is trying to be clever, it won’t open a new tab. It’ll act exactly as if you weren’t holding down Command.
You can see this for yourself here: http://getglue.com/books/design_of_everyday_things/donald_norman
Try to Command-click on any of the “Similar” items in the sidebar. They all open in the current tab.
If you install this extension and refresh the page, they open in a new tab. Just like you said they should.
Disclaimer: This is a little bit of a hack. It might mess things up a bit, though I don’t expect it to. If you have any trouble clicking on links, disable the extension, refresh the page, and see if it helps. If it does, please let me know on the support page.
Doesn’t work on Brightspace. Tried restarting, turning off and on, etc.
Doesn’t work anymore. At least, not for downloading PDFs from my bank’s website. They always open in the same tab no matter what.
10/10
This is so simple but such a lifesaver. Thanks so much!
So far so good
Fixes Chrome so that cmd+click opens pages on a new tab again, like it should (but stopped working, perhaps due to code change by Google and / or Apple?)
Works like a charm! Thank you!
Awesome. Thank you. Finally I can open bank of america and citi links in a new tab instead of a window!
Thanks!! Works perfect! 🙌🏼
UPDATE 3.10.15. I forgot about this extension and recently must have accidentally disabled it. Naturally, the command-click problem started driving me bonkers again, so I Googled the problem. Fortunately, one of the search results was a link to this extension, and that’s when the lightbulb went on: I’ll bet I disabled it! Sure enough…turned it back on, and all is right with the world again. THANK YOU, Peter!

It just works! This was driving me crazy in Google Groups (of all places). They just would not let you open a link in a new tab. Take THAT, Google Groups!
Wonderful.
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!!!!
Thank you so much! This should really be built into Chrome by default
Worked straight from the moment I installed it. Excellent add-on!
This works excellent for my Mac at home!
Are there are any similar things like this for Windows? I’m having a similar issue on my work (PC/Windows) computer.
Thank you
As of today, ESPN stopped allowing you to Command-Click and this extension worked like a charm!
Well done. Works perfectly. Thanks.
